Thomas Dale

Freeman Boys, Deep Run Girls Victorious

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

Consistency won out for Deep Run‘s girls and Douglas Freeman‘s guys en route to the Colonial District track and field championship.

Out of 15 events, the Wildcats scored in 14, usually in the top four. Out of 15 events, the Rebels scored in 13, again usually in championship or medal fashion.

Deep Run took the crown scoring 151.5 points, 31.5 more than second place Maggie Walker.

Briana Hudson (high jump), Joanna Hassell (55-meter dash), the 800-meter relay team (Hudson, Hassell, Julia Drapac, Marlena Daly) and the 1,600 relay team (Katie Fuson, Jay’vonne Bowman, Ashley Orr, Caroline Turner) were Deep Run’s only champions.

But in the other events, Deep Run wasn’t far behind the individual champ as Hudson, Orr, Bowman and Erica and Courtney Dobbs ate up crucial points.

That helped fight off terrific individual performances from Maggie Walker’s Susannah Piersol, the runner of the year, and J.R. Tucker‘s Jasia Richardson, the field event performer of the year.

Piersol took the 1,600 and 3,200 runs and ran a great leg in Maggie Walker’s 3,200 relay team that broke their own record of a year ago, the only female record broken this season.

Richardson’s Tiger team finished fifth, but Richardson took home the long and triple jumps.

“I came in a litle nervous because my competition is also my really good friends,” Richardson said. “But I came out on top. I’m good. I’m happy.”

Freeman’s Quash earned runner of the year honors behind his 300 and 55 hurdles crowns, and a terrific anchor leg of the 1,600 relay champs.

The Rebels also received a title performance from Ulrick Smith (500) and several second-place finishes.

Chris Kourlesis of Tucker was the field event performer of the meet with his long and triple jump titles, equaling his female counterpart, Richardson.

Capital/Colonial Kickoff

The first day of the Capital and Colonial District track and field championships finished with no huge surprises.

Deep Run holds an 11.5 point lead over Douglas Freeman behind the efforts of Briana Hudson (high jump champ, 5-2) and four Wildcats finishing from second to fifth in the long jump.

Maggie Walker GS’ 3,200-meter relay girls knocked down its own previous district record with a time of 10:00.87, almost two seconds faster than last season’s mark.

On the boys side in the Colonial, Patrick Henry holds a nine-point margin over Deep Run as Theo Duncan took the shot put crown, with Adrian Cavanagh (third) not too far behind.

Atlee leads both Capital meets. The girls by a significant margin, the boys by only one point over defending champion Highland Springs, who got 10 points from long jump champion Marcus Burley.

Pole vault champion Emma Dejarnette (11-6) and second place Rachael Hawks (10-6) paced the girls effort for the Raiders.

Fourth Is Ward’s, JM’s

by Stephen M. Lewis
DigitalSports Richmond

The NFL is a copycat league. Add the Central Region to the list.

A couple of weeks ago, Deep Run put a box-and-one defense on John Marshall star Travis McKie. He went scoreless, but the Justices pulled out a close victory.

Tuesday night, Mills Godwin – who’s been playing the box-and-one most of the season with great success – put the box on JM.

It worked magnificently – until the fourth quarter.

That’s when Randall Ward went bananas. The junior guard poured in 14 of his game-high 21 points in the deciding quarter, bringing JM back from 12 points down to defeat Godwin 52-47.

Offense stagnant and down 41-29 on a bucket by Kefentse Budd (team-high 12 points), Ward and a full-court pressure defense took control for the Justices.

McKie (10 points, five blocks) nailed two free throws and blocked a Godwin shot to start a fastbreak. Farrar found Ward on the left side as he converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Godwin coach Hunter Thomas quickly called timeout.

Fletcher Lumpkin (nine points) scored out of the timeout to halt the bleeding, but the Band-Aid fell off as Godwin wouldn’t score again until 1:48 remained in the contest.

Ward dropped a trey from the right corner to slice the lead to six, 43-37.

He and McKie came up with a couple of steals that led to three free throws, two from McKie and one from Aaron Farrar. Then Ward drilled another trey with 3:45 to go, and yet another on the next possession to put JM ahead 46-43.

“Ward got hot,” Godwin coach Hunter Thomas said. “He did a great job. We had to get out of it at that point.”

McKie added two more free throws before Budd’s aforementioned bucket at 1:48 left the score at 48-45.

But the Eagles (10-4, 13-8) would get no closer as Ward, JM’s sixth-man, dropped in a nasty floater to keep John Marshall’s winning streak (now at 13 games) and unbeaten Colonial District record (14-0 Colonial, 17-2) intact.

The regular-season district trophy is already engraved.

“C.T., Lamar and our coaches told us don’t panic,” Ward said. “We were down by 12, but don’t panic, keep the team calm so we can come back. We knew we could do it, we just were not shooting well.”

Panic is exactly was Thomas didn’t want his team to do when JM rolled their full-court pressure out. But that’s what happened.

After playing an almost flawless third quarter in terms of scoring efficiency and defense, it was the total opposite in the final period.

Godwin scored on 10 of their 16 third-quarter possessions, coughing up no turnovers. In the fourth period, the Eagles relinquished six turnovers and scored on four of 17 possessions.

“Sums it up right there,” Thomas said. “We take care of the ball and finish around the basket a couple of times, we win. We had some easy shots. Their pressure got to us.”

Is this box-and-one trend getting to JM? Justices coach Frank Threatts doesn’t think so.

“We have solved the problem. Let ’em keep playing it,” a candid Threatts said. “We don’t have a one-man team. All the teams that we are going to see, tell ’em play the box. Play the triangle.

“It feels good [to be unbeaten in the district]. My kids didn’t expect it. I didn’t think we would be this good. But you have Travis on your team and you have the other guys, too.”
