Justices looking to take it one step at a time

John Marshall football coach Marvin Bridges believes he got ahead of himself last season.

With four-year starter Nick Tyler at quarterback, a massive offensive line and talented skill players, he believes he put too much pressure on his group to make the playoffs.

“I thought I might have put too much on their plate,” Bridges said after Monday’s practice, the first of the season for JM. “Instead of looking ahead we’ll take one step at a time. Right now our focus is Armstrong.

“Instead of putting up my whole schedule in the locker room, I’m just putting up the next team we play.”

Coach Marvin Bridges hopes to pass the four-win plateau.
The Justices went 4-6 last season, their second such campaign under Bridges. JM lost the aforementioned Tyler but gain Darius Jackson under center, who actually split time with Tyler down the stretch.

He’ll frequently look for the talented DeMoss Moore at receiver and pitch to former All-Metro running back Jayvon Brownlee.

Brownlee battled foot and ankle injuries all last season, hampering his junior campaign after an All-Metro season in 2005.

He should gain over 1,000 yards behind a mammoth and talented offensive line that Bridges calls the strength of the team.

The line is led by Jalal Gee and Kenneth Jones.

The time is now for JM.

Though many talented sophomores may make the squad and earn playing time, the aforementioned players are all seniors, including Moore.

“Hopefully,” Moore said, “we do what the coaches tell us to do and we have a good season.”

Ahh, there in lies the problem at John Marshall for over 10 years. A lack of discipline.

Bridges and his coaching staff constantly battle players with a lack of discipline and respect for football, and what it takes to prepare for football.

Whining and complaining ran rampant at Monday’s practice.

That in turn hinders the coaches from getting the fundamentals of the game through to the players.

It’s the main reason penalties like offside, false starts and too many men on the field are prevalent in games for JM and end up in losses.

The speedy DeMoss Moore looks to get plenty of opportunities in the open field.
“If we can eliminate the mistakes and capitalize on other teams’ mistakes,” Bridges said, “then we’ll be able to reach our goals.”

Key game: Armstrong. The Justices fell 7-6 in last season’s opener to the Wildcats. JM controlled the game going up and down the field, but had several turnovers in the red zone. The Justices have to get off to a good start to get to .500 or above.
JM is hoping to take off in 2007.
